Ten Websites Perfect for Killing Time

Believe it or not, Betas get bored too!

Let us be honest: Most of us live hectic lives. Nevertheless, even the busiest of us experience those frustrating bits of down time. You know, the ones that are too long to just sit around, but not long enough to get into anything worthwhile? This could be waiting for a date to arrive, a few extra minutes between classes, in the back row at Church when the preacher has made his point but is now filling up the sermon with random things because church has to be done at noon and not 11 50, you get the idea.

Well here at El Iluminador are about to revolutionize ‘internet lounging’ as you know it. Here you are, ten websites that will be worth your while when you have some free time . (phrases in parentheses are the site’s catchphrase-or one of them)

10. Google Fight

Category: Just For Fun/ Infotainment

What it is: The premise of Google Fight is exactly as the name suggests: a ‘fight’ to see what term pulls more hits from a Google search. Using kick-boxing stickmen, the website helps answer some of life’s most pressing questions: Who gets more internet hits; God or the Devil? Elvis or Michael Jackson? Batman vs. Superman? Sigma Lambda Beta or that other Fraternity?

Try it! It might sound silly, but it is one of the finest time-wasting devices on the web

9. Endgadget: (Editor in Chief’s Pick)

Category: Technology

What it is: The holy grail of technological news. Everything: from Google’s business decisions to modifications Apple is making for the next iPad, Navy rail guns and solar-powered trains, end gadget has it all. Their well-varied media (articles, videos, podcasts etc.) makes it accessible to a diverse audience. So, whether you are a tech junkie, or just looking for some wisdom before you make a phone purchase, endgadget is your site

8. Sigma Lambda Beta

Category: Fraternity news

What it is: Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity is a historically Latino-based social fraternity that was fou….Oh listen to me, going on about what you know already. Now,  tell the world about us!

Particularly Special Because: The Website just got a fresh new look!

7. FML (Your Everyday Life Stories) and GMH (Life is Beautiful Today!)

Category: Feel-Good / Humor

What they are: FML (F my Life) gained notoriety in the past few years by playing on the most basic of human pleasures: somebody else’s pain. People submit short anecdotes of the embarrassing/horrible things that happen to them, and the rest of us can vote on whether it was just messed up if they deserved it! Oh sweet sadism!

GMH (Gives Me Hope) was created in response to FML, even proclaiming to be ‘FML for Optimists”. Here, people put cute/motivational/positive stories that they encountered; and we all just smile. Both are guaranteed to brighten your day: the choice on which to use on a particular day is yours!

6. It Gets Better (Give Hope to LGBT Youth)

Category: LGBT Awareness/Tolerance

What it is: The ‘It Gets Better’ Campaign is aimed at providing support for young members of the LGBT community. To say this demographic faces a lot of ignorance and persecution is an understatement. This website shares stories of hope through blog posts and videos. The campaign has gained support from the world over, and has been endorsed by several celebrities. Even sports teams (for ex. The Seattle Mariners, Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays etc.) have reached out and supported it.

Particularly Special Because: The issue of gays is a divisive one, especially within our fraternity. This is because, with a minority emphasis, a lot of our members come from socially conservative homes. Also, our virtue of diversity turns into a vice when brothers stop accepting types that they have not met before. With that said, it is important that we educate ourselves on this issue.

5. Reddit (The Front Page of the Internet)

Category: Everything under the Sun

What it is: I must admit, Reddit wasn’t on this writer’s original list- until a couple of good friends encouraged to take a look at it. Boy, have I been missing out. Their tagline “The front page of the internet” fits perfectly! You want to talk politics? Religion? Sport? Pop Culture? You name it, there is a discussion on it going on. And oh, it is linked to IMGUR,  and those who know about IMGUR will tell you it is the site for the most interesting pictures out there. Reddit is the site, get on it!

4. AskMen (Men’s Online Magazine)

Category: Fashion, Dating and Other guy stuff

What it is: Gone are (for the most part) the days when men would subscribe to style magazines. Unfortunately, so are the days when our elders would take time to instruct the young male on how to act. Well, fear no more, ye men who pursue swag! AskMen.Com is the on-line mecca for the modern male. If you need information on etiquette, sex, women, fashion and your day-to-day fascinations, you have to go to AskMen. While the ladies will always have Oprah, Cosmo and Martha Stewart, the fellas can rest easy knowing that AskMen lives.

3. Bleacher Report (Entertaining Sports News, Photos and Slide Shows)

Category: Sport

What it is:  As we get to the top of the list, here is a website that can only be characterized as amazing. How amazing? Non-sports fans will spend hours on it if introduced to it. Not only does it cover current sports events; it provides the most intriguing commentary and opinions. For example, a big topic today is “the most divisive athletes of all time”. Some all-time favorites are ’20 dumbest things athletes have done’ and ‘The Heaviest Drinkers in Sports History”. Tell me those aren’t lists you would want to read!

Particularly Special Because: They have such a great international focus. You ever see a list and think “That’s fine, but I’m new to the US/don’t care much for baseball-so what good is a top ten list with 7 baseball players on it?” or “ Barry Bonds? Pshh, I know a guy in Madagascar who could hit way harder than him!” You get it all, from South African Golfer, European Soccer Players and all your American Favorites”

2. Cracked (America’s only humor site since 1958)

Category: Humor/Social Commentary/ Lists

What it is: Wow, it was hard not giving this website first place! There is a list of every single fascinating and funny thing in the world here! Ever wondered what the worst Halloween costume ideas were? Or maybe, who the 5 craziest dictators to live were? Maybe you are more interested in the 5 fictional characters that had mental disorders you did not know. If this website is not worth your time, remind me to buy you a drink the next time we meet!

  1. Sporcle.Com (Mentally Stimulating Diversions)

Because we all need to keep our minds sharp. This is the ultimate trivia quiz database. The quizzes range from naming world countries, states etc., to filling out the lyrics for your favorite TV shows and identifying NFL Hall of Famers: anything. There are new quizzes every day. Also, if you register under your school (which you don’t have to), you can see what your school Sporcle ranking is. Without a doubt, Sporcle is this writer’s favorite website at this stage of my life.

Well we, at El Iluminador, hope we have helped conquer that boring 45 minute gap you have between your classes. At least, we have given you healthier, dignified alternatives to your other late night internet engagements!
